A bit about White Pines

White Pines is one of the first pieces I wrote on classical guitar many moons ago. At that time my teacher had thought me to play and arrangement of Mother Nature’s Son by The Beatles. A Paul McCartney song actually.

I remember being very loosely inspired by the song and starting to fiddle around with a D chord followed by C/D which I thought had a really appealing open and suspended quality about it. I guess that’s pretty much where the comparison ends.

There are some odd time signatures in this piece. Basically a 4/4 piece, but with some 6/4, 3/4 and 5/4 here and there. I didn’t bother much about keeping a stiff time signature then, which probably was a good thing.

The White Pines title comes from a quiet wooded area were I would often go for a walk. I still go there and admire the tall white pines and catch a regular glimpse of a beautiful red fox.
